Too many fucking titles. It sounds like assistant is supposed to be higher, but the associate graduated before the assistant did. Very confusing.

Everyone in your industry knows the differences by institution. See my post below.

Because companies are formed though a bunch of mergers and acquisitions and many of these constituent companies used different titles.

DBG is right. You can generally tell by looking at the corporate title, e.g., VP, Executive Director, Director, Managing Director, etc.

Associate Counsel << AVP/Senior Counsel << VP or ED Assistant General Counsel << MD/Associate General Counsel << SVP/Deputy General Counsel << EVP/General Counsel.

Thats at BoA and JPMorgan. At Goldman its simpler. At Goldman its VP/Assistant GC and MD/Associate General Counsel and of course each LOB has a GC. Way fewer intermediate titles.

At HSBC its 90% AVP/Senior Counsel and 10% VP/AGC and a tiny number of GCs.

Citi can be weird and it depends on the LOB.

The European banks generally have a lot more AVPs like HSBC whereas in the US its a relatively rare title in legal.

thanks for this. Some are collapsing their legal titles, I'm fairly certain that BONY is removing some intermediate titles.
